Windows 10 Build 16170 - Download ISOs [Redstone 3]

After several months of active development of ‘Creators Update', codenamed Redstone 2, Microsoft is now actively working on Redstone 3. Despite the fact ‘Creators Update’ is not rolling out just yet (scheduled to 11th April) through Windows Update for everyone, the first build from upcoming major update is already available for Insiders on Fast Ring, which build number is 16170.

Windows team has just started working on RS3. The first build from the new branch was spotted on 19th February, build number 15141, while today’s build number is 16170. Clearly, a big bump, but don’t expect new features or anything exciting. As mentioned on Windows Blog, we’re [Windows team] focused on making some refinements to OneCore and doing some code refactoring and other engineering work that is necessary to make sure OneCore is optimally structured for teams to start checking in code. This also means more bugs and other issues that could be slightly more painful to live with.

Despite the lack of excitement on this build, there are a lot of new things scheduled for Redstone 3, some of which were delayed from Redstone 2. For example, we expect a new design language known as NEON, the return of OneDrive placeholders, MyPeople (a widget on taskbar that would allow to easily contact with people via e-mail, skype, etc), and more. Certainly, Microsoft will tell us more about this update at Build conference on May.

What’s new?

In addition to under the hood improvements, there are also some bug fixes. It’s not clear if those issues came from Redstone 2 development, or it’s part of Redstone 3 development. Anyway, if they are from Redstone 2 Microsoft will also fix them through Cumulative Updates.
There is one minor visible change on Windows Explorer where the old Share icon was refreshed to match new iconography used across store apps.

Known issues

You have been warned! Tweaking OneCore and other sub-system code can bring lots of instability and issues. Despite there is a known issues list on Windows Blog, the usability can be a bit painful, so think twice before installing the next builds on your daily driver PC.
